A good spotting scope is a valuable tool in the backcountry allowing you to cover a lot of ground with your eyes, not your feet. It’s essential to have a good system to carry and protect your glass in the field. Here are three questions we regularly get asked about spotting scopes and tripods:

Q1. How do I carry my spotting scope on a Stone Glacier Pack?
A. We offer multiple options for spotting scope carry. The first way to carry your scope is by using our Spotting Scope Pocket. This accessory works with all Stone Glacier packs and can be attached in numerous configurations on the outside of the bag using any of the front or side compression straps. Our Spotting Scope Pocket is designed to fit both angled and straight eyepiece spotting scopes.
The second way is to store your spotter inside the pack and access it through a side zip or beavertail pocket. Packs that include a side zip pocket or beavertail pockets are:
- EVO 40/56 - 1 side-zip access pocket
- R3 5900 - 1 beavertail pocket with 22” center-zip
- Sky 5900 - 1 beavertail pocket with 22” center-zip
- Sky Archer 6200 - 1 side-zip access pocket
- Sky Talus 6900 - 2 external side-zip pockets
- Sky Guide 7900 - 1 external side-zip pocket and 1 beavertail pocket with 22” center zip
Lastly, If you’re looking for a daypack or ultralight system most guys gravitate towards the Approach 1800 or Serac 1700. The Approach bag is equipped with a built-in spotting scope pocket on the right side of the bag.
Q2. Will my spotting scope fit in a Stone Glacier Pack?
A. Our Spotting Scope Pocket (18” Tall x 7” Wide) will accommodate nearly all spotting scopes including the Swarovski ATX/STX models in both the angled and straight eyepiece styles and the Leica APO Televid 82 angled or straight scopes. All Stone Glacier packs with a side zip, or beavertail pocket will also accommodate spotting scopes of this size.

Q3. How do I carry my tripod on a Stone Glacier Pack?
A. All Stone Glacier packs have three compression straps on each side of the bag. These straps are great for lashing down your tripod. Additionally, many Stone Glacier packs have open topped side pockets that are designed for seating the base of your tripod into. The Serac 1700, Approach 1800, Sky Talus 6900 and Sky Guide 7900 all have an additional pocket on the face of the pack to secure the feet of your tripod.
